Museum Neka, Ubud

The superb Neka Museum, in Campuan, is another excellent museum, with marvelous collections of traditional Balinese paintings by local artists and foreign artists who lived in Bali; and items of modern Balinese art. The museum stores art from the Kamasan style of the 16th century to modern 20th century paintings. The whole collection is displayed chronologically, to provide an overview of Bali's history of fine arts.

The Neka Gallery on Jalan Raya , and the Agung Rai Gallery in Peliatan are some of Bali's largest and most important.

The Neka Art Museum was opened in 1982 and is named after a Balinese teacher Suteja Neka who collected paintings as a means of artistic documentation. Nowadays the museum has a great selection of works from many famous Balinese artists and expats who have lived here and influenced local artists.

IF A MUSEUM is only a collection of art or its buildings, then it has no purpose. A museum is successful only if it provides a sense of history, development, and continuity. While individual pieces can be fascinating by the themselves, when properly presented they all fit together like the parts of a puzzle and form a complete picture.

The Neka Art Museum, previously known as the Neka Museum, is unique because its collection of foreign artworks by Balinese, other Indonesian, and foreign artists all were inspired by the natural beauty, life, and culture of Bali. The Neka art museum in Ubud houses a large collection of paintings by Balinese and expatriates that have lived in Bali and influenced local artists. Opened back in 1982, the museum is named after and displays the collection of it's founder and Balinese teacher Suteja Neka.
